Framing the Essence of Interweaving and Architecting

In the search for the underlying meaning, essence of an idea and practice, it is often beneficial to visit and explore areas, topics, aspects, or subject fields that are known to be interweaved with the explored ideas, artefacts, and practices. In order to explore the frame, focus, scope (what is included, excluded) and scope, we visit intersecting, or overlapping, ways of thinking, theories, practices, etc. that are known to be relevant to the idea of architecture, the practices of interweaving and architecting). 

It it is worth mentioning that an underlying belief for the Framework of Interweaving and Architecting approach (FIA) is, that it is beneficial for inhabitants of an enterprise, organisation, etc. to look at their worlds through the lenses of the interweave and architecture. A lens that focus on the salient, fundamental,important, material, essential, or instrumental elements that interweave the strands of an organisation, enterprise, building, facility, system.

Another belief of FIA is that Interweaves and Architects are not interested in everything in the world, their interests are framed and interweaved with other adjacent disciplines and professions. There is no need to refine, redefine, reinvent, just complement and interweave. 

One can read this article as an article about What interweaving and architecting is Not. However, this is not the case. All the explored topics intersect or overlap with interweaving and architecting in some way. Although … 

  • they does not constitute distinguishing characteristics of the interweaving architectural essence.
  • in many cases more specific approaches can (and often are) developed that contract or expand a general senses of I&A by incorporating particular and specific parts. This is notably a key feature of FIA that enable the developed of specialised approaches. 
    Examples include; add structured method(s) for building or equipment design and engineering, add design, systems, or service thinking, define an approach for information system that also include information management, define an approach that focus on delivering blueprints. 

In the exploration we find a number of frequently occurring arguments why something is not being considered as part of the interweaving architectural essence:

  • The topic is too generic in the sense that it provides no guidance on what to include or exclude in I&A. 
  • The topic is already defined and well established elsewhere so there is no need to refine it. It can be used or incorporated instead of reinvented or redefined. 
  • The topic is relevant to and used in most other knowledge intensive professions, disciplines and is not unique to I&A. Parts of it can be incorporated and used, or fusion disciplines can be created, such as Architectural Design similarly to Design Engineering. 

An example: SWOT (strength, weakness, opportunity, threat) is a general analysis technique that can be (and is) used by architects. There exists many, many other similar methods, techniques that can be used by architects but also many other professions, such as marketers, business analysts, strategists, managers, accountants, designers, engineers, manufacturers. Subsequently a use of a specific set of selected and general methods, techniques does not characterise the essence of I&A, since such methods, techniques are not unique to I&A, they are defined elsewhere, and provides no guidance on what to architecturally include nor exclude. Architects use such methods and techniques, but a person does not practice architecting merely because the person only use a standard SWOT-analysis. A SWOT-analysis may become architectural when it is framed to focus of architectural concerns.
